What Is Remedial Massage Therapy?

Remedial massage is one of the best ways to treat many of our commonest modern-day ailments. Problems such as stress, lack of energy, repetitive strain injury, sleeplessness, fatigue, PMT, headache, back ache, tummy ache and, in fact, any aches or pains anywhere in the body, feel better after the right massage routine.

Remedial massage is the manipulation of the body's soft tissue structures (muscles, connective tissue, etc) in order to release those structures so the whole body can operate more freely, in the short term this helps to relieve aches and pains etc. In the long term this gives you a buffer zone which will help you recover more quickly from stressful situations, illnesses, injuries, etc.

Massage is a natural tranquillizer, stroking the body slows the heartbeat, lowers the blood pressure and is the fastest most effective way to relax. But massage is also invigorating, it improves the functioning of many of the body's systems, promotes healing and tones the muscles leaving you with a feeling of renewed energy.

Effects of massage.

The Circulation and Lymphatic System

By dilating the blood vessels massage increases the circulation of blood throughout the body. This means that an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients can be supplied to all areas of the body helping it to be healthy and to function properly.

The lymphatic system drains and eliminates the waste products that accumulate from the natural functioning of the body. But unlike the blood circulation this system is pumped round by the action of the muscles which squeeze the lymph vessels. Massage can help to drain the vessels more efficiently and encourage more effective filtering and elimination of the waste products, thus it aids in strengthening the immune system.

The Digestion

Massage helps to mobilize the digestive system and therefore the process of assimilation and elimination are improved. The digestive system is quick to respond to stress and the reduction in tension and anxiety which comes from regular massage helps to calm and regulate the digestive system.

The Muscles

When a muscle is tight blood cannot flow as easily through it, depriving the muscle of the nutrients that it needs to repair itself. Regular massage reduces the tension in the muscles and aid the healing process.

The Nervous System

The nervous system is soothed by slow, rhythmic massage which can help insomnia and stress related conditions. Brisk massage can stimulate the nervous system and can help lethargy or fatigue from excess work or sporting activities.

The Skin

Massage increases the blood flow to the skin and this in turn nourishes the collagen fibers and the sweat and sebaceous glands. This helps the skin maintain its elasticity and keeps it moisturized.

Sports Massage and Repetitive strain Injuries (RSI)

Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances caused by repetitive strenuous physical activity.  Massage prior to and after sport may help to enhance performance aid recovery and prevent future injury.

Sports massage uses deep tissue massage techniques to improve suppleness and Flexibility of muscles & joints, it also improves the circulation which helps to speed up the healing of damaged or stressed muscles, tissues, & joints helping to prevent injury.

You do not need to be involved in sports to have a sports massage as the techniques used are beneficial for many other conditions from RSI to muscular tension.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Sports massage techniques are also used to relieve symptoms of RSI and are very effective in the treatment of chronic or acute pain conditions which are caused by restrictions or adhesions in the muscles and surrounding tissues.  These restrictions can build up over time causing pain and discomfort and are often due to repetitive movements.

Restrictions may also be cased by injury or accident, sports, poor posture, repetitive strain or overuse i.e. prolonged computer work.

Treatment techniques include:- Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Soft Tissue Release and Stretching, Ice and Heat therapy may also be used.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Tennis and Golfers Elbow
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain
  • Tendonitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Runners’ Knee
  • Whiplash
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
  • General muscle tension and soreness

Deep Tissue Massage

This powerful technique is extremely effective on tight muscles.  Focusing on the deeper muscle layers it allows maximum pressure o reach and relieve deep down muscular stress and tension by using slower strokes and direct pressure applied across the muscle fibers, tendons and fascias.

When muscles are tense and stressed they block oxygen and nutrients which can lead to inflammation and build up of toxins.  Deep tissue massage will loosen the muscles, releasing toxins, allowing oxygen and blood flow to circulate more efficiently.

A deep tissue/sports massage is both corrective and therapeutic and is usually concentrated on more specific areas.  As many toxins are leased during deep tissue work it is very important to drink plenty of water to help eliminate these from the body.

Vodder MLD for the face

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) was developed in the 1930’s by a Danish massage therapist, Dr Emil Vodder.  MLD is a very gentle, but incredibly powerful technique that consists of slow, delicate, repetitive movements that gently palpate and move skin, stimulating the lymphatic system to work more efficiently.  MLD is an extremely versatile treatment and for best results must be used on a regular basis.  It can help:

  • Reduce eye bags and puffiness
  • Rejuvenate skin, diminish fine lines
  • Alleviate sinuses, tinnitus, headaches
  • Migraines, eczema, acne and rosacea
  • Or can simply be used purely for relaxation

To treat specific conditions a course of MLD sessions may be required and your therapist will be able to advise you of this during your consultation.

Aftercare Advice

Massage can help the body systems function more efficiently by speeding up waste removal and eliminating toxins.  It is not unusual to feel a little bit ore following deep tissue/sports massage, this is a temporary effect and can be relieved by drinking plenty of water after yor treatment, which will help flush our the toxins and reduce soreness.  It is also advisable to avoid alcohol and caffeine following your treatment.
